Google Voice + Gizmo5 + Sipdroid

There is a lot of buzz about using voice over ip on the Droid with the Sipdroid (www.sipdroid.org) application. Already having signed up for Google Voice a few months ago, i decided to buy the Droid with the soul purpose of using Voip calls on the Droid with out ever touching the PSTN (Public Telephone Switched Network). I have a the 49.99 unlimited data plan from Verizon with no voice minutes. My cell phone number is not known or published to any body else other than me.

Now lets talk about Gizmo5. Gizmo5 is a software client for the PC and some mobile phones that will let you place/receive out bound calls via SIP. When you sign up at Gizmo5 for a username and password, you also get a 10 digit number (SIP based). This typically is a 747 area code number. Gizmo just recently got bought by Google, so new signups are currently closed (http://www.gizmo5.com/)

How does VOIP calls work on the Droid ?

a. Signup for Google voice number - currently invite only, unless you already have one.
b. Signup for Gizmo5 account - currently signups are closed, unless you already have one.
c. Take note of your Gizmo5 SIP based 10 digit phone number (Typically 1-747-XXX-YYYY)
d. Log into your Google Voice account and add a new destination to ring and add the Gizmo number (1-747-XXXX-YYYY).
e. Google voice will want to verify your Gizmo5 phone number. In order to do this verification, you will have to download the Gizmo client to your computer (http://www.gizmo5.com/) and call *76+ your google voice number from the Gizmo client and enter the authentication code they prompt you to enter on the Google Voice webpage.
f. Once your Gizmo5 number if verified, check the box in Google Voice settings to forward all Google Voice calls to your SIP based Gizmo number.
g. Open Android market on your Droid and search for an app called Sipdroid. Install the application.
h. Once installed under SIP Account settings configure the following.
i. Username = to the Gizmo5 username you signed up for
ii. Password = Gizmo5 password at signup
iii. SIP Server = proxy01.sipphone.com
iv. Leave domain name, port and protocol at their defaults (UDP 5060)

i. SIPDroid should register and a green dot should show up on the top left hand corner in the notification system tray. This indicates that SIPDroid is ready to place calls.

j. Outbound calls from contacts when dialed, automatically is picked up by Sipdroid and dialed out. Gizmo5 has a 3 minute demo mode unless you have purchased enough credits (minutes). The call will disconnect in 3 minutes

h. Inbound calls to your Google voice number is totally free and gets routed to Sipdroid.

First Looks at the Droid

Slightly heavier than the iphone, the weight factor coming in from having a real slide out qwerty keyboard, the Droid seems to be putting a stiff competition to other smartphones including the iphone and blackberry storm. The Android 2.0 interface is very crisp and easy to navigate. Web browsing speeds and page reloads are pretty fast. The Android Market has a ton of free apps, easy to download and install.

Bought it at Wirefly for 99$

Struck an excellent deal (courtesy of DkMenon) at http://www.wirefly.com/ for 99$. Their catch is that for 180 days you cant downgrade or change any thing on the plan. On top of this agreement, you have a new 2 year agreement with Verizon Wireless. At the moment the price seems to have jumped back to 149$...

Motorola Droid is here!

Finally the much awaited Motorola Droid is here!! 199$ for new customers with a 100$ mail in rebate. Priced right to compete with Apple iPhone.
